Are Collagen and Protein Powders the Same?

Look for a protein supplement and you’ll find an overwhelming number of choices: whey, pea, and other protein powders alongside collagen, collagen peptides, and multi-collagen products. How do you know which one is right for you?

Why Do We Need Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and is found in our skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Different types of collagen perform different jobs, but collectively, they help give our tissues strength, structure, and flexibility. Collagen basically helps hold our bodies together.

Our bodies naturally make collagen, but production changes as we age. So will adding a collagen supplement benefit us? The research is promising in some areas and less certain in others.

How is Collagen Different than Protein Powder?

The difference between collagen and protein powders is blurry because they are both composed of amino acids.

Most protein powders are designed to help us meet our overall protein needs and provide the essential amino acids needed for functions such as maintaining and building muscle.

Collagen, however, is a very specific type of protein with a different amino acid profile from protein powder. It’s rich in three amino acids (glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) which help give collagen its unique structure.

But collagen does not contain all nine essential amino acids that make a complete protein. Collagan lacks tryptophan which is used to make proteins and is also a precursor for serotonin and melatonin. Collagen is also low in several other essential amino acids, including leucine, which helps stimulate muscle protein synthesis.

Because of its limited amino acid profile, collagen is considered an incomplete protein, so it shouldn’t be relied upon as your primary protein source if your goal is to meet overall protein needs or maintain muscle. So, while collagen powders and protein powders both contain protein, they aren’t nutritionally interchangeable.

This is important when reading labels. A collagen powder might contain “20 grams of protein,” and a whey or pea protein powder might also contain 20 grams. But those 20 grams are not the same protein components.

What Are Collagen Peptides?

You may see the terms collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen on supplement labels. A peptide is simply a short chain of amino acids. Hydrolyzed collagen uses the manufacturing process to break down collagen into peptides. Hydrolyzing the collagen before we consume it simply performs some of the breakdown ahead of time.

Smaller pieces dissolve more easily in liquids so collagen can be better digested and absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. For this reason, many collagen supplement powders consist of hydrolyzed collagen peptides.

Can We Get Collagen from Food?

Absolutely, collagen is naturally found in animal connective tissue. Food sources include skin-on chicken and fish, as well as tougher cuts of beef that contain connective tissue, cartilage, and bones. Bone broth is a great example of slow-cooking animal bones for collagen.

Just like other dietary proteins, collagen from food sources gets digested into smaller peptides and amino acids. Your body absorbs these components and determines how to use them.

Types of Collagen

Scientists have identified at least 28 types of collagen, with 5 types having the most research. Types I, II, and III account for most of the collagen you’ll find in foods and supplements. Types IV and V have more structural roles.

  • Type I is the most abundant collagen in the body. It is found primarily in skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues. Many bovine and marine collagen peptide supplements are rich in Type I collagen.
  • Type II is the predominant collagen in chicken cartilage and contains a rich array of nutrients for joint pain, immune health, and improving digestion.
  • Type III is commonly found alongside Type I and is present in skin, blood vessels, muscles, and internal organs. Bovine collagen supplements usually contain both Types I and III.
  • Type IV is mostly found in basement membranes that support and separate tissues.
  • Type V works with other collagen types and is found in tissues including skin, bone, and the cornea.

Types IV and V play important roles in the body, but they usually aren’t the reason to buy a collagen supplement. And the more collagen “types” listed on a product doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better option.

Why Collagen is Important for Aging

Our bodies continually make and break down collagen, but that balance changes with age. Collagen synthesis declines and existing collagen becomes more fragile.

Usually, we’ll notice these changes first with our skin. Our skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic which shows more wrinkles and sagging. Changes in our collagen production and connective tissue also affect:

  • Cartilage and joint structure
  • Tendons and ligaments
  • Bone structure
  • Blood vessels
  • Muscle connective tissue
  • Skin thickness and elasticity

For women, menopause adds another important factor. Estrogen plays a role in maintaining skin collagen, so when estrogen levels decline during and after menopause, our skin thickness may decline, too.

Lifestyle matters. Smoking and excessive UV exposure can accelerate collagen damage. Good nutrition, physical activity, and resistance exercise can benefit collagen production as we age.

Collagen Supplementation: Does it Work?

This is where marketing gets ahead of the science. There is real, legitimate research on collagen supplementation, mainly for skin and joint health, and some research supporting bones.

Skin Hydration, Elasticity, and Wrinkles

Skin health is probably the most heavily marketed use for collagen peptides.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of 26 randomized controlled trials involving 1,721 participants found that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation was associated with improvements in skin hydration and elasticity.

A 2025 meta-analysis examined 23 randomized controlled trials and initially found improvements in hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles. However, when researchers separated the studies according to quality and funding, the benefits disappeared in higher-quality studies and in studies that were not funded by pharmaceutical companies. In other words, there may be benefits, but the evidence isn’t as definitive as supplement marketing sometimes suggests.

Joint Health

The evidence for joints is promising, particularly in people who have osteoarthritis.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 11 randomized controlled trials involving 870 people with existing knee osteoarthritis. Those who took collagen supplements experienced more improvement in both joint pain and function compared with placebo.

Bone Health

One study followed 131 postmenopausal women with reduced bone mineral density. Those who received 5 grams/day of collagen peptides for one year showed improvements in bone mineral density at both the spine and femoral neck compared with the placebo group. It’s very encouraging, but more research is needed.

Muscle

This is where collagen shouldn’t be confused with protein powder.

Research in older women found that whey protein stimulated muscle protein synthesis much more effectively than collagen peptides. Recent research in older men evaluated the effects of whey protein, pea protein, and collagen. It found that both whey and pea protein increased muscle protein synthesis while collagen did not.

Help Your Body Make Its Own Collagen

Taking a collagen supplement isn’t the only way to support collagen production. Your body needs adequate protein along with several micronutrients to manufacture and maintain collagen. To support your own collagen synthesis, get these nutrients from food:

  • Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kiwi, and potatoes.
  • Protein and amino acids: Meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
  • Glycine and proline: Animal connective tissues and gelatin are rich sources, but these amino acids are also found in other protein-containing foods.
  • Zinc: Oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, nuts, seeds, dairy products, and whole grains.
  • Copper: Shellfish, liver, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, and mushrooms.

A varied, nutrient-dense diet can be a great foundation for collagen production.

Adding a Collagen Supplement

First, identify your goals. If you’d like to have skin, bone, and joint support, a collagen supplement may be right for you. If you want to meet an overall protein goal or support muscle, a protein powder may be the better choice.

When evaluating a product:

  • Look for hydrolyzed collagen or collagen peptides for a powder that dissolves easily.
  • Identify the source, such as bovine, marine, porcine, or chicken. This is particularly important if you have food allergies or dietary restrictions.
  • Look for third-party testing for identity, purity, and contaminants such as heavy metals.
  • Avoid flavors, sweeteners, gums, or a long list of added ingredients.
  • Look at the actual amount of collagen per serving.
  • Don’t assume “multi-collagen” means better. More collagen types aren’t necessarily more effective.

Collagen peptides generally mix easily into coffee, tea, smoothies, yogurt, or water, making them relatively easy to incorporate into your routine. You also don’t need to take collagen on an empty stomach. Consistency is more important.

The Bottom Line

Collagen isn’t a magic anti-aging powder, but there is good research suggesting benefits for joint, skin, bone, and connective-tissue health.

If you decide to use collagen, be clear about what you want it to accomplish. Don’t use it as a substitute for complete dietary protein, and don’t overlook the basics your body needs to build and maintain its own collagen: adequate protein, vitamin C and other nutrients, exercise, and an overall nutrient-dense diet.
